LANCASTER LORE
Tidbits of History

Public roads were almost nonexistent in Lancaster County until the year 1705. In that year surveyors were ordered to lay out roads leading to churches courthouses, mills and storehouses across the entire Northern Neck, and local residents turned out in force to clear timber and build bridges. Many of the roads we use today have their origins in the back-breaking work our ancestors performed a scant fifty years after Lancaster became a county.
