LANCASTER LORE
Tidbits of History

Do you think you can name all the towns and villages in Lancaster? How about Whealton? In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the village we now know as Morattico was called Whealton, because land comprising the area had been bought by S.H. Wealton and John H. Whealton in 1889. In those days, the steamboats regularly called at Whealton, but after the steamboats largely disappeared from the scene in the 1930s, the name Morattico, which had been used since before John Smith's visit to the locale in 1608, was restored.
